Rattan is a traditional material for furniture, and being a natural and a comfortable product, it is a popular choice for conservatories and as sunroom furniture. However, being a natural product, it cannot handle moisture and overly humid outdoor conditions.
This was before synthetic rattan made its way into the market. Synthetic rattan furniture has all the benefits of natural rattan with no disadvantages.
Before buying your synthetic rattan furniture you should consider the following;
The fiber – Synthetic rattan is made from high-density PVC or from high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and come in a range of qualities. Either variety is no more durable than the other, but the HDPE variety is environmentally friendly. Also look for a 10-year warranty with water and UV protection.
The weave –The denser and tight the weave is, the more durable your furniture will be. As a rule looser weaves will be cheaper.
The Frame – Outdoor/ patio rattan furniture will require frames that do not rust. Therefore look for aluminum frames that have a high strength to weight ratio. The frames should also be powder coated so that the color of the frame matches the rattan.
Cushions – Gone are the days when you need to bring your cushions in when it rains or when the sun is too strong. Most stores stock waterproof/ UV resistant cushions and covers.
Design – Synthetic rattan has made it easier for designers to use rattan in the form of sofas, side tables, coffee tables, armchairs and love seats. Most of the designs are modern and have clean lines.
